Why and How E-mail Viral Marketing Works
Implans has an interesting feature on viral marketing on their site. The Bottomline: virusses spread only then, when they’re easy to transmit. And since communication on the internet generally is very “cheap” compared to old media, it’s an ideal spreading ground for all kinds of e-mail memes:
What does a virus have to do with marketing? Viral marketing describes any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message’s exposure and influence. Like viruses, such strategies take advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message to thousands… [...] Public health nurses offer sage advice at flu season: stay away from people who cough, wash your hands often, and don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Viruses only spread when they’re easy to transmit. Viral e-mail marketing works great on the Internet because instant communication has become so easy and inexpensive.
On the other hand, one has to consider the disadvantages of unsolicited bulk mail.

RIAA learns in Viral Marketing
Nine Inch Nail’s Trent Reznor leaks songs from his new album via USB drives hidden in bathrooms. Fans share the songs. Websites post the songs. Websites receive cease and desist letters from the RIAA. An RIAA representative confirms this, a move that boggles the minds of many.
“These f*cking idiots are going after a campaign that the label signed off on!”
Or may the RIAA is simply taking viral marketing to the next level?
Final Mass Effect Viral Marketing Video
The final Mass Effect Viral marketing video popped up on YouTube today. All three Emergency Transmission videos depict a chaotic battlefield with mortars and plasma beams blowing up everywhere. I’m sure there’s a deeper meaning; you can’t take viral marketing at face value. Dig deep and tell viralbytes what you think!
On using viral video for your independent film
Should there be more viral videos from short and independent films? It seems the big movies are doing more and more viral video releases to generate interest, not that it is always needed. Why aren’t there more smaller pictures creating these popular videos? Especially when you consider that the average viral video can be produced rather quickly and inexpensively.
Now granted, on the average small feature or short film the producers don’t have the money or more importantly time to waste on extra videos, but at least putting more stuff like teaser trailers, short clips, etc. out to the masses. Maybe it is naive of me or maybe I am just too excited about the book next on my reading list, The Complete Independent Movie Marketing Handbook. Who knows? It is definitely something to think about in the future though
